Glenn Beck: The Letter

June 23, 2009

GLENN: I got a letter from a woman in Arizona. She writes an open letter to our nation’s leadership:

I’m a homegrown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me. There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you’re willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now. You might ask yourself what my views and issues are that I would horribly feel so disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut job am I? Will you please tell me?

Well, these are briefly my views and issues for which I seek representation:

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I’m not a racist. This isn’t to be confused with legal immigration.

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution and honor it.

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Glenn Beck’s Common Sense

The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine

“If you believe it’s time to put principles above parties, character above campaign promises, and Common Sense above all—then I ask you to read this book…”

Nearly two and a half centuries after Thomas Paine’s masterpiece changed America forever, Glenn Beck revisits it with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government’s easy solutions, two-part monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

A Troubled Week In Iran – June 22, 2009

In the ten days since Iran's disputed presidential election, street demonstrations have taken place every day. Iranian citizens, supporters of opposition candidates, continue to take to the streets and document what they encounter there, despite explicit government bans, the danger of arrest (many hundreds placed in custody), or possible physical harm (at least 19 deaths so far). Iranian officials maintain their stance that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the undisputed winner, and have increased restrictions and pressure on opposition members, protesters, foreign media and communication networks as they work to regain control. President Barack Obama recently stated that the government of Iran should "recognize that the world is watching." Many of the photographs here were taken and transmitted at great risk in the past week, in the hopes that others would be able to see and bear witness.

Three Dirty Little Secrets in the Public Health-Care Plan

By: Edward Morrissey | June 18, 2009

The Obama administration insists that the health-care reform plan that has received failing marks already from the Congressional Budget Office must include a public plan for health insurance coverage. Only a public plan can stoke competition with the private market insurers, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told the Associated Press this week. That must come as a shock to anyone who understands that any private market, including the health-insurance market, provides competition within itself and between its participants. In fact, the entire idea of private markets is to ensure competition, efficiency, and value for consumers.

Critics have accused the administration of including the public plan in ObamaCare as a stalking horse for a single-payer nationalization of the health-care sector in the US. Sebelius and the White House both hotly deny it, but Sebelius' answer as reported by the AP demonstrates exactly how the stalking horse would drive private insurers out of the business entirely:

Sebelius said that President Barack Obama does not want to drive health insurers out of business, but make them more competitive by offering working families and small businesses the option of a public plan without the high overhead costs of marketing, administration and profits.

Without “the high overhead costs of marketing, administration, and profits”? Does Sebelius really promise that anyone – government or private insurer – can offer plans without any administration costs at all? Who will handle the claims? Who will pay the doctors? I doubt that any high-ranking government official has ever made such a clueless claim about business in any context, let alone the highly-regulated market of health insurance.

Some Psychos Can’t Be Reached

by Ted Nugent – June 18, 2009

In his role as the guard captain of a Florida prison camp in the movie Cool Hand Luke, one of actor Strother Martin’s more famous lines was: “Some men you just can’t reach…”

There have always been psychotics intoxicated on power and evil. Such is the case for international kooks Kim Jong-Il of North Korea and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran. These men can’t be reached with diplomacy, logic or reason.

It’s incredibly naive and arrogant of the Obama blowhards to believe they can “talk” and reason through pragmatism with rabid kooks. Believing so is kookier than the kooks themselves.

As someone who believes in giving kooks enough rope to hang themselves, the right course of action would be to sever all communications with rogue, whacky regimes until they prove to the world they no longer have rabies. In the meantime, America should walk loudly, proudly, and carry an oil-soaked 2x4 wrapped with rusty barbed wire and always be ready to swat international kooks upside the head.

GLOBAL WARMING SCAM

Your “Carbon Legacy” – Huh?

March 17, 2009

A new study signals what may be on the legislative horizon if proponents of large CO2 emission reductions (Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama) have their way with the USA. And what it is may surprise if not shock you.

Watch the (4:38) video

The Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change was created to disseminate factual reports and sound commentary on new developments in the worldwide scientific quest to determine the climatic and biological consequences of the ongoing rise in the air's CO2 content.  It meets this objective through weekly online publication of its CO2 Science magazine, which contains editorials on topics of current concern and mini-reviews of recently published peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, books, and other educational materials.  In this endeavor, the Center attempts to separate reality from rhetoric in the emotionally charged debate that swirls around the subject of carbon dioxide and global change.  In addition, to help students and teachers gain greater insight into the biological aspects of this phenomenon, the Center maintains on-line instructions on how to conduct CO2 enrichment and depletion experiments in its Global Change Laboratory (located in its Education Center section), which allow interested parties to conduct similar studies in their own homes and classrooms.

Cap and Trade Will Cost Consumers

Written by David Baumann | Wednesday, June 24, 2009

The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 sponsored by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-California) and Edward Markey (D-Massachusetts) recently passed out of committee and is now before the full House of Representatives. The centerpiece of the Waxman-Markey Bill is cap and trade, a mechanism devised to penalize the use of hydrocarbon fossil fuels based on their emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide is thought by many to be a major contributor to global warming.

Under cap and trade, a government body sets a limit on the permissible total amount of a pollutant by issuing credits. In Waxman-Markey, one credit is allotted for one metric ton of CO2 emissions. Industries or utilities that pollute more buy CO2 credits from those that pollute less. In theory, the credit price will be established by market forces and is designed to reduce emissions through the process of penalty and reward.

25 Logos With Hidden Messages – Amazing Graphic Designing Tricks!

By Charlie B. Johnson | graphicdesignblog.org

As a graphic designer, it feels great to find my customers so convinced about the power of a logo and what benefits it can earn them. Ten Commandments for Being the Company Spokesperson

You sent out the press release and included the contact information. You are listed as the spokesperson for your company-but what does that mean? And how can you be an effective one?

As a spokesperson, you represent your company. You are the human link between the media and your company. Although a powerful way to raise your company's profile, two-dimensional press releases can not connect with a journalist like a person can. If your press release is the lure and the hook, you, as the spokesperson, need to reel them in.

First, always be available, easily reached, and completely prepared for comment. Journalists work on all kinds of deadlines. If a journalist takes the time to call, be available to talk to them...

Live Happy with New iPhone Application

Our happiness levels are influenced by three factors: our genes, our circumstances and what we choose to do every day. While there's nothing we can do about our genes and circumstances are hard to change, we can much more easily control our daily activities.

Recent psychological research has begun to show particular types of activities that can increase our happiness levels over the short and even long term. But it can be difficult to keep up these activities over a period of time.

That's where a new application recently released for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch comes in. The Live Happy application has been developed by psychology-based web and mobile application developers Signal Patterns in conjunction with Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a leading light in the field of positive psychology.

How to Avoid Procrastination: Think Concrete

Is your to-do list as long as your arm?

New study finds procrastination is warded off by considering tasks in concrete terms.

Although procrastination is usually thought of as something to be avoided, this hasn't always been the case. Surveying the history of procrastination Dr Piers Steel finds that before the industrial revolution procrastination might have been seen in neutral terms (Steel, 2007; PDF).

Nowadays, though, for those living in technically advanced societies, procrastination has become a 'modern malady': everything must be done now or, even better, three weeks ago. For good or evil there are now endless to-do lists to work through, appointments that must be kept and commitments that have to be fulfilled. Such is modern life.

Whatever the cause many people certainly view their procrastination as a problem. Psychologists have found that college students consider themselves champion procrastinators with almost half considering it problematic. Adults are not far behind with some 15-20% self-identifying as 'chronic procrastinators'. Meanwhile the rest of us are guaranteed to procrastinate from time to time. So, perhaps psychology can offer some hope in the ongoing fight against procrastination.

10 Things to Say to Keep the Peace

By Laurie Puhn, Real Simple

(Real Simple)—So many big arguments begin with small comments. How many times have you started a conversation on friendly terms, then wound up in some kind of dispute that you didn’t anticipate?

Know when to table a conversation. Sometimes you just have to say, “Let’s wait until we have more information.”

In my work as a family, divorce, and small-claims mediator, I’ve seen countless offhand remarks start a fight or add fuel to an existing fire. And I have found myself in plenty of situations where I’ve wanted to give someone (my husband, a colleague) what I thought was helpful advice only to inadvertently offend him or her.

The holidays, with all their extended-family gatherings, can be a verbal minefield. You’re either dodging nosy questions from some tactless relative over dinner (“Still dieting then?”) or taking out the stress of all that extra cooking and shopping on those dearest to you (“Do I have to do everything around here?”).

It doesn’t have to be that bad. Use these 10 go-to phrases to defuse potentially volatile conversations and help you get through the coming years—in harmony.

A Bird’s Eye View of Russia

From up there, it seems splendid. And it is. The economical problems, the social wounds, the dirt, alas, everything that doesn't matter and ends up disappearing when you watch the place in this way. Just like a big bird that looks down while it flies, the helicopter flew over thousands of kilometres. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Rostov, Novosibirsk, along with several other cities, in the urban and rural areas, was captured masterfully. Bridges, rivers, lakes, roads, buildings, palaces, countless breathtaking landscapes. Even the colours of urban chaos, with a pollution of cables, poles, trails and endless rows of traffic are different, giving a false sense of tranquility. A set to look at and appreciate.

Bora - Unquestionably the most mythical of the Pacific islands remains the island of all dreams.

The legends, mysteries, and romance associated with the words “Bora Bora” bring an almost mystical presence to the island. The island, located about 230 kilometres northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef.

Bora Bora is predestined for snorkeling and scuba diving in and around its lagoon.

Made famous by books, movies, and its stunning beauty, the island is now besieged by tourism and overcrowding. Regardless, if you must visit a South Pacific island (and you should), Bora Bora would be an excellent choice.

The Health Benefits of Sex

ABC News | June 16, 2009

A good sex life is one way to stay happy, healthy, and fit.

For example, sex can actually cause you to get fewer colds. Research has shown that couples who have sex weekly have a 30 percent increase in immunoglobulin A, an antibody that fights infection. Sex can also help women have a more predictable period schedule, as a result of being exposed to male pheromones.

In addition, having sex reduces stress – for physiological as well as emotional reasons. Sex activates a nerve that has a calming effect. Having sex also lowers blood pressure, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

Sex can even reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol!

Why Apples, Avocados and a Glass of Red Wine Could Ease Your Arthritis

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER – June 22, 2009

Arthritis is the term used for nearly 200 painful conditions of the joints and bones. It affects about 7 million people in the UK and all types have similar symptoms of swelling, inflammation of joints, stiffness and restriction of movement.

Many of us take our joints for granted until they start playing up, by which time significant damage may already have occurred. But the sooner you start looking after your joints, the better.

The good news is that many cases of arthritis can be relieved, postponed or even prevented by good joint care.

Research shows a definite link between the food you eat and the severity of your symptoms. Like your heart, your joints thrive best on plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Try to eat at least five (and preferably eight or more) servings a day.

How the Fed Contributes to Crises
Written By Kerry Lynch | Friday, June 19, 2009

The remarks below are excerpted from a recent interview by Morningstar’s Bill Bergman with Walker Todd, Martin Mayer, and Edward Kane on the current financial situation. In addition to being an AIER Research Fellow, Walker Todd directs AIER’s Summer Fellowship Program. Martin Mayer and Edward Kane are also familiar faces at AIER. They have both participated in AIER conferences, given lectures concerning their research, and will present seminars in the 2009 Summer Fellowship Program.

“The notion that the nation’s currency is backed by a bunch of junk bonds and CDOs and such things on the books of the Federal Reserve District Banks is pretty scary.”

– Martin Mayer, noted financial journalist, Brookings Institution scholar, and the author of more than 30 books on financial market issues

“Officials panicked in September 2008, and the public lost confidence in their ability to manage. It is striking how in these different agencies, a small inner circle of people have closed themselves off to ideas from even the rest of their staff. I understand that in a lot of agencies everybody goes home on time, but this inner circle has been working itself to death. Along with panic, I think there is exhaustion and some loss of judgment, because they’ve been under pressure for so long.”

– Edward Kane, professor of finance at Boston College and past president of the American Finance Association

“I think all the chickens will begin flocking home to roost in about the middle of the third quarter. Whenever the further downturn comes, if I’m right, what will these players do for an encore? What happens if and when the next downturn comes?”

– Walker Todd, AIER Research Fellow and former attorney and consultant at the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and Cleveland

Read the entire interview, including analysis of the current financial situation and the Fed's response to it, in the Morningstar article “How the Fed Contributes to Crises.”
