QUOTES OF THE WEEK
“A short saying oft contains much wisdom.” ~Sophocles (496 BC - 406 BC)
“You never know when one act, or one word of encouragement can change a life forever.”
—Zig Ziglar
“When you believe and think “I can,” you activate your motivation, commitment, confidence, concentration and excitement–all of which relate directly to achievement.”
—Dr. Jerry Lynch
“Do a little more than you’re paid to. Give a little more than you have to. Try a little harder than you want to. Aim a little higher than you think possible, and give a lot of thanks to God for health, family, and friends.”
—Art Linkletter
INSPIRATION
Persistence
“If I had to select one quality, one personal characteristic that I regard as being most highly correlated with success, whatever the field, I would pick the trait of persistence.”
—Richard DeVos, Amway Co-founder
Probably the greatest example of persistence is Abraham Lincoln. If you want to learn about somebody who didn’t quit, look no further.
Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.
He could have quit many times–but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of our country.
Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up. Here is a sketch of Lincoln’s road to the White House:
§ 1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
§ 1818 His mother died.
§ 1831 Failed in business.
§ 1832 Ran for state legislature-lost.
§ 1832 Also lost his job-wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in.
§ 1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
§ 1834 Ran for state legislature again-won.
§ 1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
§ 1836 Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
§ 1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature-defeated.
§ 1840 Sought to become elector-defeated.
§ 1843 Ran for Congress-lost.
§ 1846 Ran for Congress again-this time he won-went to Washington and did a good job.
§ 1848 Ran for re-election to Congress-lost.
§ 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state-rejected.
§ 1854 Ran for Senate of the United States-lost.
§ 1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention-get less than 100 votes.
§ 1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again-again he lost.
§ 1860 Elected president of the United States.

Politician Fights
They are usually civilized and their behavior is within the limits of normal behavior. But, there are exceptions. When the politician from opposite political party lead you to madness, then the mannerliness is forgotten. And, then the fights begin…

Typhoon Morakot – August 10, 2009
After forming as a tropical depression over the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 km east of the Philippines on August 2nd, Typhoon Morakot built in power and moved quickly west. Over the past several days, the storm has passed over the Philippines, Taiwan and Mainland China, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage due to high winds, flooding and mudslides. Southeast China evacuated nearly 1 million people ahead of the storm, after Morakot broke many records in Taiwan, dumping a total of 2.5 meters (100 inches) of rain on the island. At least 40 people are known to have died so far, but hundreds remain missing - many from one village in Taiwan, reportedly engulfed by a mudslide during the storm.

Obama Pledges Full Amnesty For All Illegal Aliens By 2010
The Last Crusade | Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
President Obama, attending a North American summit with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, vowed to pursue comprehensive U.S. immigration reform later this year with a view to enacting legislation in 2010 that would provide a “pathway to citizenship” for the 12 to 32 million illegal immigrants now in the United States.
In a joint news conference in Guadalajara with Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Mr. Obama said he regards immigration reform as being in the long-term interest of the United States. “We have a broken immigration system,” he told the press. “Nobody denies it.”

A Question Of Eligibility: Is Obama’s Presidency Constitutionally Legitimate? (DVD)
WHAT if the president of the United States is not constitutionally eligible to serve? Is it possible that a straightforward criterion was overlooked during a long, grueling, expensive campaign? Why are so many questions about something so simple still going unanswered? “A Question Of Eligibility” goes where no other documentary has dared to go in seeking the answers to those questions, including one that millions of Americans are asking: “Why won’t Barack Obama release publicly the long-form birth certificate he claims to have from the state of Hawaii?”
In this video, you will hear from four experts on the subject: Dr. Jerome Corsi, author of the New York Times No. 1 bestseller “The Obama Nation”; Orly Taitz, the Southern California lawyer who has led the legal fight to secure the evidence of Barack Obama’s eligibility; Alan Keyes, a third-party presidential candidate in 2008 and the man who challenged Obama for the Illinois U.S. Senate seat that served as a springboard to his presidential ambitions; and Janet Porter, radio talk-show host and political activist who has championed the constitutional issue.

Low-Budget Fusion Reactor Could Generate Energy within a Decade
by Lisa Zyga, PhysOrg.com | August 4th, 2009
(PhysOrg.com) -- Currently, most nuclear fusion power plants are large, expensive projects that will take decades to benefit from. But a startup company in Vancouver, Canada, called General Fusion is taking the fast track to fusion, with a plan to build a working prototype fusion power plant within the next decade at a cost of less than a billion dollars.
General Fusion has recently raised enough financial support - $13.5 million - from public and private investors to start the project. Rather than using expensive superconducting magnets (tokamaks) like the $14-billion ITER project in France or powerful lasers like those used by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the US, General Fusion plans to try a relatively low-tech approach called magnetized target fusion.
The reactor consists of a metal sphere with a diameter of three meters. Inside the sphere, a liquid mixture of lithium and lead spins to create a vortex with a vertical cavity in the center. Then, the researchers inject two donut-shaped plasma rings called spheromaks into the top and bottom of the vertical cavity - like "blowing smoke rings at each other," explains Doug Richardson, chief executive of General Fusion.
General Fusion's reactor design consists of 220 pistons that simultaneously ram a metal sphere. This creates a shock wave inside the sphere, so that plasma rings in the center create a fusion reaction. Credit: General Fusion.

PERSONAL FINANCE – INCOME TAX | CANADA
So, You Got A Tax Refund
By Francis D’Costa, President of D’Costa Financial Group, Markham, Ontario
According to the Minister of National Revenue, the average tax refund is over $1,400 for the 2008 tax year. Surprisingly, many Canadians are thrilled about getting a big refund. While certain situations can lead to an unusual tax refund, far too many Canadians lend large sums of money to the government at 0% interest year after year. Two things you can do to make your refunds smaller are:
File a new TD1 - When Ben started his new job several years ago, he completed a TD1 form with his employer. This form tells Ben's boss how much to deduct from his income for taxes. He has since married and had two children. Ben should complete a new TD1 form that better reflects his situation today. These life changing events provide Ben with more tax lowering opportunities and, rather than getting a large refund, he prefers to have less deducted from his paycheques.
File a T1213 - Cheryl makes RRSP deposits on a monthly basis by automatic bank withdrawal. By completing a T1213 “Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source” form; her employer can reduce her monthly salary by the RRSP deposit before calculating tax deductions. This gives Cheryl an instant tax break rather than a big refund.
Mike was laid off for a few months. Julie had some unusual medical bills. Doug and Mary started their twins in daycare. These events resulted in tax refunds that were not normal. Then again, many plan on getting refunds each year. What can you do with your income tax refund? Here are some ideas:
Start an emergency fund - Like many, Mike didn't expect to get laid off. It took almost six weeks to receive his first Employment Insurance payment. Mike deposited $5,000 of his refund in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Next time there is an employment interruption, he can dip into his TFSA to help get him through. Any withdrawals he makes get added back to his contribution room the following year, so he can replenish his emergency funds.
Pay down high interest debts - Julie had incurred some unusual expenses and some went on her credit cards. Most bank credit cards charge about 19% annual interest on outstanding balances. Any new charges to the cards attract the same interest until the balance is paid off. Julie used her refund to pay down her credit card balances and save on interest costs.
Pay down the mortgage - Doug and Mary have $250,000 left on their 5% mortgage. They have twenty years left to pay on the current amortization schedule. If left as is, they will pay $144,320 in mortgage interest over the next twenty years, assuming the same interest rate throughout. Let's say they will be getting a $2,500 tax refund every year and apply it to the principal. Doug and Mary will reduce the interest paid on their mortgage by $26,981 and pay it off about 3 years sooner.
It can be tempting to view a tax refund as found money and blow it on consumer items. A little bit of financial discipline now can make a very real difference in your long-term financial situation. After all, do you really want to lend your money for free?

Something to think about…
“In 1950, the average family of four paid 2% of its earnings to federal taxes. Today it pays 24%.”
--William R. Mattox, Jr., Columnist (written sometime before 1996. It’s higher now and getting worse!)
Now consider this…
305,529,237: U.S. population estimate for Jan. 1, 2009
545 of them are screwing everything up:
435 representatives of U.S. House of Representatives
100 U.S. Senators
9 U.S. Supreme Court Justices
1 President of the United States
Politicians vs. the people
545 people vs. 305,529,237
The U.S. government: 545 tyrants (435 representatives, 100 senators, 9 supreme court justices, and 1 president) vs. 305 million citizens. It’s time to take your country back!
“Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God.”
--Thomas Jefferson’s motto
“I want you: to wake up, to wake others up, to know you are free, to think for yourself, to protect your rights, and to resist tyranny.”
—Uncle Sam
The government isn’t the country. Politicians aren’t our leaders, either. They’re the hired help and we can talk about them any way we please.

Debt In The U.S. Hits A Record High
By Kerry A. Lynch, Senior Fellow at American Institute for Economic Research
Wednesday, 12 August 2009
The total debt owed by Americans increased to $51 trillion in the first quarter of 2009. One way to put such a mind-bogglinig number in perspective is to compare it to the value of what Americans produce. Gross domestic product is roughly $14 trillion per year. Thus, Americans now owe $3.62 for every dollar of GDP. As can be seen in the chart below, this is a record.
By comparison, in 1980 Americans owed just $1.55 per dollar of GDP. The ratio began to rise sharply in the 1980s, leveled off in the early 1990s, and surged again in the late ‘90s, continuing to do so through the past decade.
Most of the increase since 2000 reflects the rising indebtedness of the private sector – that is, borrowing by nonfinancial businesses, financial intermediaries (banks and such), and households.

Greenland – August 7, 2009
After almost 300 years under Danish rule, the island of Greenland has just taken a big step toward sovereignty. Greenland passed a referendum last year requesting more powers from Copenhagen, and it was granted, taking effect on June 21st, 2009. Denmark still retains control of finances, foreign affairs, and defense, but will phase out an annual subsidy, and give over control of most of the islands natural resources. Additionally, Greenlandic is now the sole official language, and Greenlanders are now treated as a separate people under international law. Although the island is massive - with an area of over 2 million square kilometers (825,000 sq mi), its population is small, with just over 57,000 residents, 88% of Inuit descent and and 12% of European descent. Collected here are some recent photographs from all around Greenland.

Sting That Kills Cancer: Tiny ‘Nanobee’ Particles Full Of Venom Target Diseased Cells
By FIONA MACRAE, dailymail.co.uk | August 11, 2009
It's a terrifying prospect - a swarm of bees engulfing a victim to inflict hundreds of potentially lethal stings.
Scientists, however, have taken the idea and used it to inspire a treatment to take on cancer tumours.
They have developed microscopic 'bees' armed with the poison that causes the pain of stings to target cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.

People ‘Get Happier As They Age’
news.bbc.co.uk | August 7, 2009
Most people get happier as they grow older, studies on people aged up to their mid-90s suggest.
Despite worries about ill health, income, changes in social status and bereavements, later life tends to be a golden age, according to psychologists.
They found older adults generally make the best of the time they have left and have learned to avoid situations that make them feel sad or stressed.
The young should do the same, they told the American Psychological Association.

Kudlow’s Cuckoo for Clunkers
by Robert P. Murphy, Mises Daily | August 12, 2009
Here at Mises Daily, we often poke fun at left-liberal Democrats for their Keynesian ways. To prove that this is about ideas, not parties, today we’ll focus on a recent blog post in which Republican economist Larry Kudlow came out in favor of extending the “cash-for-clunkers” program.
As we’ll see, Kudlow’s arguments are pure Keynesian nonsense. Sadly, many of today’s ostensibly radical, “free-market” economists basically look at the economy in the same way as Paul Krugman. They just have a slight technical disagreement over the best way to prod people to spend money. Only the Austrian approach offers a different paradigm and allows us to see just what is wrong with the “aggregate demand” view of the economy.
Kudlow Taking a Cue From The Juice?
Right out of the gate, Kudlow’s column is impressive in its internal contradictions and utter prevarication:
“As a free-market capitalist who does not believe in artificial spending and pump-priming from Uncle Sam, I’m going to eat a little crow with the following statement: At this moment in history, if we’re going to use fiscal stimulus as Washington insists, I favor extending the cash-for-clunkers car-rebate program.”
The above quote is truly breathtaking. It’s a bit like saying, “As a self-professed vegan, I’m going to get a lot of ribbing from my associates when I declare that, if we’re going to pig out on meat the way American society tells us to, then I favor barbecued pork sandwiches at my next birthday party.”
Not only is Kudlow’s opening paragraph nonsensical, it also provides him with a blank check for the rest of the post. He is going to take it as a given that “we’re” going to use fiscal stimulus. The last time I was this stunned by such a self-serving setup was when O.J. Simpson agreed to write a book titled If I Did It.

Lightning
A weather front rolls in from the horizon; storm clouds darken the sky, and (at least 1.3 billion times a year) lightning strikes. Last month, the National Weather Service promoted their Lightning Safety Week, with information designed to call attention to safe practices, helping people avoid lightning strikes, which kill an average of 100 people every year. While the exact nature of the initial formation of lightning remains a subject of debate, what is known is that lightning strikes are caused by electrical imbalances present in the clouds. Those imbalances correct themselves suddenly, with an often-spectacular light show – which I've tried to show here, with a handful of recent photographs of lightning from around the world.
