QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“A short saying oft contains much wisdom.” ~Sophocles (496 BC - 406 BC)

Prince Charles is out of touch…

“Capitalism and consumerism have brought the world to the brink of economic and environmental collapse,” the Prince of Wales has warned. And in a searing indictment on capitalist society, Charles said, “we can no longer afford consumerism and that the ‘age of convenience’ was over.”

He then got in his limo and was driven to his other palace.

“Governments lie. It is what they do best, except for stealing, kidnapping, and killing.”

—Kent McManigal

“The state: a huge machine based on theft (taxation), kidnapping (arrest), and murder (war). I turn my back on it.”

—Bill St. Clair

“A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them.”

—P. J. O’Rourke

“Politicians are confident that they can wisely spend trillions of your dollars. The arrogance of the political class is stunning.”

—John Stossel

A Little Common Sense on a Billboard

By: Dahlia Rideout, divinecaroline.com | July 2009

A series of billboards have been appearing across America with a dose of common sense about the recession. Paid for by an anonymous benefactor, the billboards capture American common sense and urge us not to panic.

The campaign entitled “Recession 101” was designed by Florida-based designer Charlie Robb in order to remind Americans of the things that make this country great. Using ad space donated by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) the campaign includes billboards, bus shelters and even a prominent placement in New York's Time Square.

Our Muddy World July 20, 2009

Combine two of the most common materials found on the surface of our planet - dirt and water - and you get mud, which, in turn, can be played in, struggled through, rubbed on for medicinal value, or just worn for fun. Collected over the past few months from festivals sporting events and more, you'll find here photographs of people around the world playing with, wallowing in, wearing and just dealing with mud - one of the filthiest entries on the Big Picture to date.

NEWS IN PICTURES

In Afghanistan,  – July 17, 2009

Today, nearly eight years after the initial invasion of Afghanistan, the country remains unstable at best, and the U.S. is now pouring thousands of new troops into the country, joining the international coalition to combat the Taliban insurgency. This year, bomb attacks on coalition troops have reached an all-time high - at least 46 American troops killed by IEDs this year, part of the larger figure of 1,249 coalition deaths to date. On June 25th, U.S. officials announced the launch of Operation Khanjar - 4,000 U.S. Marines and hundreds of NATO and Afghan forces pushing into various parts of Helmand province attempting to secure the area ahead of Afghanistan's presidential election next month. Consider this entry a double-issue - there has been so much powerful photography coming out of Afghanistan the past few months, I had a very hard time editing down to just these, recent photographs from Afghanistan.

40th Anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing – July 17th, 2009

(AP) On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon after landing their lunar module. As he set foot on the lunar surface, Armstrong spoke his famous line, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Aldrin, who followed, described the scene as “magnificent desolation.” July 20, 2009 will be the 40th anniversary of the moon landing.

How Cash Over Credit Can Save You Money

By Brian O'Connell, mainstreet.com | July 21, 2009

Avoiding pricey credit card fees isn’t the only reason to opt for cash over credit (although it’s a good one).

Nowadays, using cash over credit has some additional post-recession benefits. After all, with consumer demand low, some businesses, including auto dealers and electronics retailers, are offering better deals for cash-carrying customers. Other service providers may cut you a deal, too.

So why pay cash over credit? Let us count the ways:

Wind Farms: Simply Full Of Hot Air?

Prominent oilman gives up turbine power ‘boondoggle’

WorldNetDaily | July 13, 2009

Oilman T. Boone Pickens has abandoned plans to build his billion-dollar wind farm in Texas, finally deciding to throw in the towel on one of the nation's most expensive alternative energy boondoggles, Jerome Corsi's Red Alert reports.

In May 2008, Pickens announced his oil company, Mesa Power LP, would order 687 wind turbines, or 1,000 megawatts of capacity, from GE at a cost of about $2 billion. By 2014, Pickens planned to expand the wind farm in west Texas to a gigantic 4,000 megawatts, about four times the output of a typical nuclear power plant.

A Dozen Don’ts for Entrepreneurs

Guy Kawasaki (How to Change the World) – June 30, 2009

Most advice to entrepreneurs focuses on what they should do: build a great product, assemble a great team, provide great service. All are “duhisms.” Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs don’t realize that there are things they should specifically avoid doing too. These are also duhisms, but somehow no one ever talks about them. Here is my list of the twelve most important things that entrepreneurs should not do.

There Are Ponzi Scheme Warning Signs

From Advocis | Thursday, July 16, 2009

Toronto – In the wake of the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme recently uncovered in the US and the one currently under investigation in Montreal allegedly perpetrated by Earl Jones, Advocis, The Financial Advisors Association of Canada, offers some red flags for investors and potential investors.

“A ponzi or pyramid scheme is an investment opportunity built on a fraud that will eventually collapse,” warns Greg Pollock, Advocis’ president and CEO. “The first and most important warning sign is the advisor offers you some unrealistic and/or consistent returns on the investment. Such promises are fundamentally contrary to the very nature of a stock market. Stock markets go up and stock markets go down. Legitimate results vary.”

Other warning signs include pressure to invest beyond your comfort level. An ethical and responsible financial advisor or planner will understand your financial goals and objectives but, most importantly, how much money you are willing to risk in any investments. A fraudulent advisor will also supposedly place all of a victim's money into one financial vehicle when in fact returns are that of the investors’ own money or more recently recruited investors.

43 Weird Things Said In Job Interviews

By Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com writer | July 22, 2009

Hiring managers reveal some of the really weird answers heard in job interviews

§   “My parents told me I need to get a job so that is why I’m here.”

§   Left my last job because “I have a problem with authority.”

§   “I get angry easily and I went to jail for domestic violence. But I won’t get mad at you.”

Hiring managers are amazed by what job applicants say during interviews.

§   “I’m not wanted in this state.”

§   “How many young women work here?”

§   “I didn’t steal it; I just borrowed it.”

§   “You touch somebody and they call it sexual harassment!”

§   “I’ve never heard such a stupid question.”

Believe it or not, the above statements weren’t overhead in bars or random conversations—they were said in job interviews.

Maybe you were nervous, you thought the employer would appreciate your honesty, or maybe you just have no boundaries. Whatever the reason, you can be certain that you shouldn’t tell an interviewer that it’s probably best if they don’t do a background check on you. (And yes, the hiring manager remembered you said that.)

We asked hiring managers to share the craziest things they’ve heard from applicants in an interview. Some are laugh-out-loud hysterical, others are jaw dropping—the majority are both. To be sure, they will relieve anyone who has ever said something unfortunate at a job interview—and simply amuse the rest of you.

Top U.S. Money Managers See Assets Plunge 23 Percent

Institutional Manager magazine | Monday July 20, 2009

Total assets in the II300, Institutional Investor’s annual ranking of the 300 largest money managers in the U.S., tumbled 23.4 percent last year, to $26.7 trillion. The hardest hit asset classes were the riskiest — equities, which fell 41.3 percent, and alternative investments, which fell 26.1 percent. Bonds, normally the darling of investors when stocks are in a tailspin, also fell, but only by 9.3 percent.

The only asset class that actually grew last year was cash equivalents, which inched up 3.9 percent, to $5.47 trillion.

5 Ways to Score a Lower Airfare

By Kelli B. Grant, smartmoney.com | July 20, 2009

THESE DAYS, getting a good deal on airfare is as much about where you book as which airline you fly.

Airlines are offering more exclusive deals and discounts to travelers who do business directly through their web sites, instead of by phone or through a third-party travel agent site, such as Expedia (EXPE: 17.25, +0.60, +3.60%), Orbitz (OWW: 2.12, +0.10, +4.95%) or Travelocity.

Struggling airlines are offering these deals in an effort to build customer loyalty and avoid paying commissions to other sites and companies for selling their airfares. “There’s a lot of money to be made, and they want to be the ones making it,” says George Hobica, the founder of AirfareWatchdog.com, a site that tracks prices on air travel.

Transactions conducted over the Internet also offer airlines cost savings because they don’t require an employee like a ticket agent to take calls over the phone. “Keeping people off the phone is so much operationally cheaper,” says Rick Seaney, the chief executive of FareCompare.com, a web site that aggregates travel deals.

Of course, every fare is unique, and many third-party vendors can still undercut prices that appear on airlines’ web sites. Expedia eliminated its booking fees in June, and Orbitz and Travelocity have extended sales that waive their fees. Without those booking fees—and with site sales in play—travelers may still find cheaper prices than airlines are charging.

Keeping on top of the latest airline-exclusive deals is as easy as signing up for the frequent flier clubs and e-newsletters of the carriers you use.

5 Most Incredible Waterfall Caverns

environmentalgraffiti.com | Friday, Jul 17, 2009

Waterfalls in caves prove that constant pounding is not like making a hole in water. Often, they have flowed over the same rock for so many hundreds of years that it finally did cave in and let the water have its way. Or, the rock was porous to begin with and rivers and streams quickly made their way in. Though popular in the virtual and gaming world, waterfalls inside caves are not very common in the real world – if you’re not counting trickles and caves behind waterfalls.

We’ve found five around the world that made the cut.

Doctors Develop A ‘Cure’ For Peanut Allergy

By David Derbyshire, dailymail.co.uk/news | July 20, 2009

Doctors have developed a potential cure for peanut allergies in a breakthrough that could help tens of thousands of children.

The pioneering therapy uses carefully controlled doses of peanut flour to ‘retrain’ a child’s faulty immune system and bring it back to normal.

In early trials, doctors successfully treated 20 children suffering from severe peanut allergies.

By the end of the six-month experiment, some of the youngsters could eat up to 12 nuts every day without suffering a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Turmeric May Help Reduce Tummy Size

Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com | May 2009

Turmeric may help reduce weight gain and suppress the growth of fat tissue, according to a new study

Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (USDA HNRCA) claim that curcumin, the major polyphenol found in turmeric, appears to cut weight gain in mice.

The research team studied mice fed high fat diets supplemented with curcumin and cell cultures incubated with curcumin.

“Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis.” said senior author Mohsen Meydani, DVM, PhD, director of the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the USDA HNRCA.

“Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets,” the expert added.

Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do

“THIS BOOK IS BASED on a single idea: You should be allowed to do whatever you want with your own person and property, as long as you don’t physically harm the person or property of a nonconsenting other.”

Thus begins a book that everyone interested in politics should read: Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do: The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in a Free Country by Peter McWilliams.  Published in 1998, it is a damning survey of how the United States had become a state composed of “clergymen with billy-clubs.”  It analyzes the consequences of punishing so-called victimless crimes from numerous viewpoints, demonstrating that regardless of what you think is the most important organizing principle or purpose of society the investigation, prosecution and punishment of these non-crimes is harmful to society.

This book is now posted online. You will find lots of thought-provoking worthwhile commentary, analysis, theory, and history.

The final chapter, on how to change the system, starts of with an extremely good bit of advice that everyone should try:

“The single most effective form of change is one-on-one interaction with the people you come into contact with day-by-day. The next time someone condemns a consensual activity in your presence, you can ask the simple question, “Well, isn’t that their own business?” Asking this, of course, may be like hitting a beehive with a baseball bat, and it may seem—after the commotion (and emotion) has died down—that attitudes have not changed. If, however, a beehive is hit often enough, the bees move somewhere else. Of course, you don’t have to hit the same hive every time. If all the people who agree that the laws against consensual crimes should be repealed post haste would go around whacking (or at least firmly tapping) every beehive that presented itself, the bees would buzz less often.”

Six Mistakes You May Be Making With Your Blog

When it comes to blogging, or building and marketing any website really, there is a lot of time and work invested into most projects, even ones that appear small at first.

One of the most frustrating things that can happen when building or writing your blog is finding out later that a specific task that you were spending time or money on was actually working against you and your blog’s progress towards it’s goals.

There are a number of mistakes that many people make every day with their blog.  Some mistakes are harmless, relatively speaking, but others can cause people to never come to your blog in the first place, come to your blog but not like the look of it and never come back, or come to your blog and decide to not come back again after reading your content.  Conquering this problem is fairly easy, just stop making these mistakes.

Here are six mistakes you may be making with your blog

Maybe the command line isn’t your favorite place to hang out, but to be an effective Linux admin, you need to be able to wield a few essential commands. These 10 commands are guaranteed to simplify your Linux admin life.

I understand that many of you don’t want to use the command line in Linux (or in any operating system, for that matter). But the truth is, to be a good administrator, you have to know the command line. Why? Well, with Windows there are times when the command line is the only thing that can save your skin. With Linux, the command line is vast, reliable, flexible, fast ... I could go on and on.

And of the 2119 possible commands from the /usr/bin directory (in Mandriva Spring 2008) and the 388 possible commands from /usr/sbin/, a few are indispensable. Here are 10 of them that might make your Linux admin life — or your introduction to Linux — a whole lot simpler.

Intel’s 34nm-Based 320GB Solid State Drive Creeps Closer To Reality

Hankering for an SSD that's as big as your traditional HDD? So is Intel, or so we hear. In fact, we've been hearing whispers that a capacious 320GB solid state drive was in the works since January, and now those whispers have been upgraded to library-like voices. According to the generally reliable Golum, Intel's so-called Postville SSD family is well on its way to reality, and with them should come much needed price drops.
